Mental Health Awareness Month. 37 YA Books About Mental Health

37 YA books about mental health

To continue my journey of bringing awareness to mental health, I compiled a list of thirty-seven YA books about mental health. I haven't read all of these books, and I can't say if the mental health representation is well done or not, but I did a great deal of research (aka I spent hours reading Goodreads reviews) to be sure the themes mentioned are actually portrayed in the story. I tried to include a panoply of topics regarding mental health so that everyone can find her/his story. I'm so sorry if I left someone out. 💛 Ps. There might be some spoilers.

  2. I read 9 of these, and have a bunch of them to read. Great list. A book I recently read, which I thought was done so well. was Good Enough by Jen Petro-Roy. It's about eating disorders, and she really captured a lot of the emotions and reactions I dealt with during my treatment. I will forever talk about It's Kind of Funny Story too.

  10. This is an amazing post! I've bookmarked it for later, too. They Both Die at the End is one of my all-time favorites, and the audio was fantastic. How to Make Friends with the Dark didn't work for me, but I can appreciate what the author was trying to do. All Our Broken Pieces was PHENOMENAL! I had zero complaints about that one. I've read a few of the others, and a couple are on my TBR, but I wanted to look into the ones I haven't heard of. Thanks again!

  12. So many books and I'm amazed at the number of read and there are so many I've really loved. I guess it's a sign publishing is doing something right when it comes to representing mental health and helping people feel seen and find a book thet can relate to and identify with.

    1. That's so true. I'm so happy publishers are releasing more books about mental health. The truth is that I only mentioned thirty-seven YA books, but I found out so many books that represent mental health while researching that if I were to add them all this list would have ended up with more than one hundred titles.

      Happy readings! ;)

  15. You mentioned so many good books here! I absolutely loved Made You Up and a Quiet Kind of Thunder. I think that They Both Die at the End did a great job of the representation too. I found it hard to see in Wintersong but that may be because I wasn't the biggest fan of the book overall. There are also so many here that are on my to read list like Darius the Great is Not Okay, Starfish, Eliza and her Monsters and so many more!! I better get reading.
