Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl. |
I know, I know... I'm constantly cheating on these lists. But I just couldn't short this one to ten books. Or perhaps I could, but I just love the number thirteen. These are books released in 2018 that I was dying to read, but for many different reasons (one of them being that I'm a really slow reader) I didn't have the chance to. Hopefully, 2019 will be the year I tackle them down from my TBR pile and give them all the love they deserve,

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
Why I want to read it? Apart from the gorgeous cover? Well, Vikings! I need more Viking stories with female characters that kick-butt in my life.
Why I haven't read it yet? I wanted a beautiful physical copy and not the e-book. So, I waited for the price to decrease. When I finally got it, I couldn't fit it in my reading schedule.
The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Granton
Why I want to read it?
A reimagining of William Shakespeare's King Lear blended with magic and
featuring strong female characters. Dark and bloody and clearly
summoning my name.
Why I haven't read it yet?
I haven't read it yet because of the sheer number of pages. I love big
books (and I cannot lie), but 600 pages is a daunting number of pages (says the girl who
read A Song of Ice and Fire).
Beyond a Darkened Shore by Jessica Lake
Why I want to read it?
If there's a crow on the cover, I'll automatically want to read it. Blame Six of Crows and Black Bird of the Gallows (I can't understand
why I haven't read The Raven Boys yet).
Why I haven't read it yet? I'm trying to figure out a really important reason why I haven't read it, but it's probably because I didn't have the time.

A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna
Why I want to read it? Thank you to Ruthsic @YA On My Mind for introducing me to this novel. I love mythology and folk tales with my all my heart. This novel is inspired by Mahabarat and I think it's such an amazing opportunity to learn more about ancient Indian stories.
Why I haven't read it yet? As Sky in the Deep, I got A Spark of White Fire later in the year. PS. I'm currently reading it.
Toil & Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe
Why I want to read it? Witches and witchcraft and fifteen witchy tales. Since I read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings that I'm dying to read it - especially because it features a short-story written by Shveta Thakrar and I loved her writing.
Why I haven't read it yet?
As I wrote in my review of A Thousand Beginning and Endings,
anthologies never allured me enough to read them - even thought I buy
them, I always push them to the end of my TBR pile.
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White
Why I want to read it? As you know, I love retellings and I couldn't be more excited when I learned about White's reimagining of Frankenstein with Elizabeth taking front stage. If you love Frankenstein retellings than you should definitely read Cadaver & Queen by Alisa Kwitney.
Why I haven't read it yet? To tell the truth, I'm not sure why I haven't read it yet.

The Assassin's Guide to Love and Treason by Virginia Boecker
Why I want to read it?
I first saw The Assassin's Guide to Love and Treason on Suzanne's @The Bookish Libra WoW. I feel the synopsis. Star-crossed lovers and a girl disguises as a boy are two of my
favourite tropes. Now, bring William Shakespeare into the mix and it's a
must read for me.
Why I haven't read it yet? Too many books, so little time?
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James
Why I want to read it? I vowed to myself I would be reading more sci-fi novels and this one seemed to heartbreaking-ly perfect to start my journey - a journey that I clearly didn't begin.
Why I haven't read it yet? Most reviews I've read say wonderful things about this book and, now, I'm afraid of being disappointed.
Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett
Why I want to read it? DRAGONS! When I read the word "dragons", any novel is a must read. Add a hate-to-love romance and I'll be a happy unicorn.
Why I haven't read it yet?
I'm a weird person. I'm still super-excited to read Onyx and Ivory, but
before its release Edelweiss denied my e-ARC request and we can say that I'm holding a
grudge.
The Surface Breaks by Louise O'Neill
Why I want to read it? The Surface Breaks has one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen. Anyway, how can I not want to read a feminist reimagining of The Little Mermaid?
Why I haven't read it yet? I was going to take The Surface Breaks with me to Montpellier and read it while I was there, but I couldn't fit it in my luggage. The book stayed behind and now I haven't found the time to read it.
Sea Witch by Sarah Henning
Why I want to read it? Back in 2017, I featured Sea Witch on my list of 2018 Releases I'm Dying to Get My Hands On. I loved the idea of a retelling of The Little Mermaid focused on Ursula's backstory.
Why I haven't read it yet? I've read so many bad reviews from trusted bloggers that I'm scared of reading it and be disappointed as well.
Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean
Why I want to read it? It's a Japanese fantasy and features yokai aka supernatural monsters. I can't resist monsters. Nor mythology. Can you imagine my excitement when these two worlds collide in one book?
Why I haven't read it yet? The book was released late in the year and before I knew 2019 had befallen on us.
Our Dark Stars by Audrey Grey and Krystal Wade
Why I want to read it? Beautiful cover? ✓ Sleeping Beauty in space? ✓ A war between humans and droids? ✓ All the ingredients to make me want to read a book.
Why I haven't read it yet? I received Our Dark Stars from Blaze Publishing, a publisher I used to work with. Sadly, this small published closed last year a few months after sending me the book, and I haven't had the courage to read it yet because it was their last.

Which 2018 releases were you dying to read in 2018? Why haven't you?

Argh so many pretty covers! I need to add the Sea Witch to my TBR... I like the sound of that one!
ReplyDeleteI've only read a couple of these but I really enjoyed Seawitch! I'm reading Onyx and Ivory now!
ReplyDeleteThe Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is sitting on my shelf and I so need to get to it. Hope we both do this year!

I really enjoyed Sky in the Deep- hope you do too! It's a good one. :) And I really want to read Onyx and Ivory too.
ReplyDeleteSky in the Deep and Sea Witch are the only books from your list I managed to get to last year, but I want to read all of the rest of them. Hopefully we'll both get to them all this year. :)
ReplyDeleteI want to read so very many of these. The only one I've gotten to is A Spark of White Fire, which was one of my favorites of 2018---I definitely recommend that one!!
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I'm hoping to read Beyond a Darkened Shore myself! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my TTT and my ARC review of Enchantée by Gita Trelease
Gads, all of these covers are gorgeous! Now to check out the ones that are new to me, so I can add to my own TBR pile..lol
ReplyDeleteMost of these are on my TBR but I've read The loneliest Girl in the Universe and it's pretty awesome!! Unexpected twists and just really good! I hope you enjoy it <3
ReplyDeleteUma@Books.Bags.Burgers.
I havent read toil & trouble, but I however read something similar; but in a poetry book ! since anthrologies aren't your thing, maybe poems are ? It's called witchcraft & monsters, if you would wanna look it up.
ReplyDeleteI've also been curious in The surface breaks and Sea witches awell ! I however haven't tried them yet either
SO many great or intriguing titles on here. I hope you enjoy them when you are able to read them! I really enjoyed both The Sea Witch and The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein.
ReplyDeleteHahahha I am looking at your list like "YEP I intended to read most of these too" 😂 The Loneliest Girl is one you really want to read. It is unexpected and awesome. I really liked Sky in the Deep too. The Surface Breaks wasn't my *favorite* of Louise's books, but still decent. I need to read Onyx and Ivory, Spark of White Fire, and Queens of Innis Lear for sure! And I am sad to hear that about the publisher, that is always really heartbreaking for all involved, so I can understand your reluctance. Hope you get to some of these sooN!
ReplyDeleteI totally meant to read The Queen's of Innis Lear but I feel like last year a lot of my reading plans went out the window. And i have both Empress of All Seasons and The Loneliest Girl in the Universe on my shelf waiting to be read. Maybe I should pull out one of these dusty tomes and get reading? I hope you manage to get to these releases but the problem is they keep bringing out new ones!
ReplyDeleteEmpress of All Seasons was a bit of a miss for me but I hope you'll like it better than I did. And I am the same with Sea Witch. It sounded so great and then poof, there went my dream haha.
ReplyDeleteI was curious about The Surface Breaks. The cover is so beautiful. I hope you get to a few of these.
ReplyDeleteOooo Our Dark Stars sounds fascinating! Thanks for the heads up on it!
