This is Halloween! This is Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Hallow-een! I love the creepy atmosphere, so I couldn't resist joining the Halloween Creatures Tag 2.0 hosted by Anthony @ Keep Reading Forward. I haven't officially joined Blogoween (sadly, I'll never be able to post thirteen times in a month), but I'll try to be part of some of the challenges because Halloween and talking about books is a match made in heaven.

Magical means "beautiful or delightful in a way that seems removed from everyday life", "enchanting", "bewitching". So for this prompt, I decided to pick not only one, but several books that bewitched me. Why? Because I can' just pick one! Yep, this will definitely be a long tag.

I'm a night reader, so I guess to me every book is the perfect book to read at night? Since this tag is related to Halloween and terrifying creatures, I narrowed down my picks to books filled with nightmarish monsters, murders and mystery. Hopefully, these won't give you nightmares.

Can I pick Vicious by Victoria Schwab? Or any of her books? More than ten books later, Schwab still has the ability to make me fall in love with her characters and worlds she crafts. She's so talented! It shocks me how every single of her novels is so unique even though it discusses the same themes.

Here are some characters that are truly dark (and some of them I must confess that I love to hate):
- The Commandant from An Ember in the Ashes;
- Mutt from The Scorpio Races;
- Osaron from Shades of Magic;
- Rafette from Black Bird of the Gallows;
- Sloan from Monsters of Verity.

SPOILERS ALERT! I can't only pick one character. There are so many characters that should have never died. How can authors kill these lovely, cute, funny and wonderful people? My heart hasn't recovered yet from some of these deaths.
- Rue from The Hunger Games;
- Finnick from The Hunger Games:
- Prim from The Hunger Games;
- Fred Wesley from the Harry Potter series;
- Izzi from An Ember in the Ashes.

Any book written by Victoria Schwab aka V.E. Schwab aka the Dark Queen.Why? Well,
- Literally all of her books are on my I-loved-with-all-my-heart-even-if-it-shattered-my-heart-in-pieces list;
- Fierce female characters who kick-butt:
- Jaw-dropping plots;
- All the feelings;
- Darkness, lots and lots of darkness.

I'm torn between Laia and Elias from An Ember in the Ashes. Elias does have the skills to protect himself, but Laia has the will move mountains to save everyone she loves - she never gives up or back downs. However, both of them are fighting the Empire, the Commander and the Nightbringer. So, I'm just going to protect both at all cost.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I put it down three years ago and I never finished it. I don't know how it happened since this book has everything I love: folk
tales, magic and monsters. However, it was just too slow. It sucked the life out of me. I know: BLASPHEMY! Maybe one day I'll pick it up again...

Everyday, I'm haunted by every single book on my TBR pile. They creepily stare at me, wondering when I will finally pick one of them. Every time I buy a new book (or request one more book from NetGalley), I can feel them judging me. They are constantly haunting my thoughts.

Say Her Name by James Dawson. If I already was terrified of Bloody Mary, now, I do my best to
avoid mirrors. While reading this book, I found myself thinking that I was hearing the drip-drop coming from my own bathroom. Which I was. I forgot to turn off the water because your cats like drinking from weird places like the bathroom sink.

I can say that I've a bone to pick with a lot of characters! Most recently: Jane and Charlotte from My Plain Jane. So much eye rolling! I just wanted to put some sense inside their heads. Also, Audrey Rose's father from Staking Jack the Riper. Sexism is a huge "no" for me!

As always, if you know me and have been following me for a while you already know which book I'm going to pick for this prompt: Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier. This book has a special place in my heart now and forever.

Even though I love everything that is blood-curling, these are some covers that may be too scary to look at (or hauntingly beautiful, as I would say). Ps. Anna Dressed in Blood is the perfect Halloween read. If you haven't read it yet, you should do it before a creepy doll comes after you.

The Monsters Mash! I'm tagging everyone who loves Halloween (or creepy novels) as much as I do.
What is your favourite monsters? Is it featured on any of your favourite books?
But most important: Are you excited for Halloween?
Love this tag so so much! I love Heart's Blood so much. I don't come across enough blogger who love Juliet Marillier's works. Schwab is such a talented author. I love that all her books are different so if you're in the mood for something else, she's got you covered. A Madness So Discreet is one of my favorite books too. Great answers!
ReplyDeleteYou just reminded me that I wanted to reread Anna Dressed In Blood and read the sequel hehe <3 Those covers are pretty...hauntingly beautiful certainly fits them!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO fun! I agree about the night book one- that's ALL the books I read hahah. I also am SO glad I am not the only one who felt that way about Uprooted- everyone looooves it and I just... couldn't! I really need to read the Anna Dressed in Blood series because I adore Kendare and WHY haven't I!? Also, the Salem GIF is such a win hahah.
ReplyDeleteExcellent choices here!!! You may have helped me out with your choice of a villain because Rafette ...yes! And lovely graphics! Sophie @bewareofthereader
ReplyDeleteThis was awesome and yep, I do not call forth Bloody Mary or tempt the Candy Man. Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteI was planning on reading Keeper of the Bees soon, so I'm glad it was a magical read for you! I love how many books you included, too. Some of them are on my TBR already, and others are new to me! I read Anna Dressed in Blood years ago, but I still need to finish the rest of the series. I remember getting a creepy vibe from it.
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for something seasonal, I would recommend The Lantern's Ember! It was such a fun read with a lot of references to older spooky stories.

New follower via Bloglovin'! I think your blog is lovely and simple -- I love it!
DeleteI definitely agree about The Bear and the Nightingale being a magical read. I also agree about all of the characters that shouldn't have died, especially Prim. That death gutted me.
ReplyDeleteI agree that I'm haunted by my TBR pile. The books call to me from my shelf at night, "Read me! Read me!" :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, and I've been thinking of trying to read Anna Dressed in Blood this Halloween season. Seems like I chose the perfect book!
