Bout of Books 23. Sign Up, Goals, Progress & Wrap Up

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 20th and runs through Sunday, August 26th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 23 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

I'm joining Bout of Books 23 after completely forgetting about Bout of Books 22 (in my defence it was a busy month and it has been a few months since I've felt okay ... mentally okay). So, I'm very excited for this week and hopefully I'll be able to make a dent on my TBR pile - which for some odd reason keeps growing. Does it also happen to you?

My goals for Bout of Books 23 Read-a-Thon are:
  1. To read every day 50 pages;
  2. To participate in two challenges;
  3. To update my progress every day.

Challenge: Book Plot Emoji. Tell the plot of a book (recent read, favourite, whatever) with emojis.

I've seen this challenge can be spoiler-ish (a book I really wanted to read has already been spoiled to because of it), so I will share with you the title of some of my favourite books (my Goodreads page may give you some clues).

Tomorrow I will be sharing the answers.

August 22nd

Challenge: Literary Villain. Who are your favourite literary bad guys? Can be a villain, a not-so-good-guy, or anti-hero.

I think I answered this question a a few Bout of Books ago and my pick hasn't changed it: Keris aka the Commandant from The Ember Quartet by Sabaa Tahir is my favourite villain. She is vicious and unfeeling, will hurt and kill whoever gets in her way or plans - even if that person is her own son.

However, if you ask me about anti-heroes, Victor Vale from Vicious by V.E. Schwab and Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

August 23rd

Pages read today: 40 pages of Beyond the Red, 15 pages of On Monsters & 90 pages of Hidden Huntress
Books read today: Beyond the Red, On Monsters & Hidden Huntress
Books finished: Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerry Masniscalco
Total of pages read: 512 pages
Challenge: Book Trip. Share books set in places you want to visit. Make a road trip of settings in the US or a dream vacation. Or you can think outside the box and choose fantasy, paranormal, historical, or sci-fi setting. Like Hogwarts!

Books truly have the power to wake up the travel bug in me. Here are some of the places I would love to visit and which books made me love the place.

Ireland seems a magical place. Its folk tales are beautiful and so inspiring. Oh, and the folk creatures are so alluring. Who wouldn't like to meet a fairy? One of the nice ones, not one of those who would trick you into the fairy world ... or definitely one of those.

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
Dreams by Daniela Sacerdoti
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. Let's pretend that Thisby is real. One day I'll ride a capaill uisce.

I think I'm repeating myself, but Eastern Europe has such a variety of charming places. I'm completely in love with the architecture. And the folk tales - folk tales have a special place in my heart. Can you recommend me book set in Easter Europe?

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Prague, Czech Republic.
The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden. Russia
Dracula by Bram Stoker. Romania

I would also love to visit Verity from This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab, Red London from A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab and Ketterdam from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I know all of these are Fictional Lands, but if you look closely their are inspired by real places: you've a new America, a parallel London and a loosely based Ketterdam on Netherlands.

August 24th

Pages read today: 20 pages of On Monsters & 125 pages of Hidden Huntress
Books read today: On Monsters & Hidden Huntress
Books finished: Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerry Masniscalco
Total of pages read: 657 pages
Challenge: Bookish Playlist. What's a song that always reminds you of a certain book? Is it something the characters listen to? Do the lyrics remind you of the plot?

If I'm awful at book poetry, I'm even worse at creating playlists for books. *hides in a corner* However, my WIP is slightly inspired by Demons by Imagine Dragons.

August 25th

Pages read today: 25 pages of On Monsters & 170 pages of Hidden Huntress
Books read today: On Monsters & Hidden Huntress
Books finished: Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerry Masniscalco
Total of pages read: 852 pages
Challenge: Discover Books. Bout of Books is known to add to your TBR instead of reduce it. Embrace it by sharing the books you've discovered through Bout of Books.

I've been part of Bout of Books for many years, but I confess I don't think it never never made me any any book to my TBR pile.

August 26th

Pages read today: 73 pages of Hidden Huntress, 65 pages of Beyond the Red & 15 pages of On Monsters
Books read today: Hidden Huntress, Beyond the Red & On Monsters
Books finished: Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerry Masniscalco; Hidden Huntress by Danielle L. Jensen
Total of pages read: 1015 pages
Challenge: Stretch Goal. It's the last day of the readathon, so today's challenge is to take a look at the goals you set for the week (if you have them) and decide a) how you can stretch yourself to complete them or b) how you can revise them so you can meet them.

I've met all of my goals, so...

WRAP-UP

Although, I met my goals, I only finished two books (and started reading two more) which means I didn't make a dent on my TBR pile as I wihed to - in a matter of fact, the pile has grow a LOT this past week after some book orders arrived and NetGalley accepted one of my requests.
Anyway, how many books did you tackle down? How many pages did you read? Is you TBR pile shorter?
I hope to see everyone on the next Bout of Books. 😊
